This workshop is an introductory course to the centuries-old skill of writing in beautiful, flowing Copperplate calligraphy, using traditional dip-pen and ink.
In these six sessions, participants will gain a foundational understanding of Copperplate, and to correctly identify the script’s unique features. Through relaxing and meditative practice, they will begin to execute lowercase and uppercase letters with confidence. Perfect for absolute beginners or self-taught calligraphy enthusiasts who want a systematic way to learn and improve their writing.
Each session will incorporate demonstrations by the instructor and discussions with participants. The majority of the time will be taken up by hands-on practice by participants, with guidance and gentle critique from the instructor. Participants may be asked to view instructional videos to deepen their understanding.
Trainer Profile
Ms Dorothy Lim-Chew is deeply passionate about calligraphy, and to share it with people far-and-wide, she founded the Beginners Table, a free-to-public calligraphy-sharing platform (2016 to present). She is also the Founder & Curator of The Art of Letters, an online platform promoting calligraphic art through an international mentorship programme, exhibition, art auction and art sale since 2019.
Graduating with a BA Hons in English Literature and History, Dorothy has built a career in the publishing industry since the early 1990s as an editor, author, designer, consultant and trainer.
The Calligraphy Kit will consist of course notes, exemplars, an oblique calligraphy holder, nibs, walnut ink, special papers for use in calligraphy.
